In the Balkans, Slovenia is ahead of the rest, with Telekom, the country's leading provider of ICT services, having already launched the first 5G mobile network in July this year. Slovenia is now one of 18 of the European Union's 27 members with a 5G commercial network.

At the moment Greece is unveiling the 5G communications network, on the opposite end of Europe, a Greek professor, a communications engineer, is getting a grant from the European Research Council to develop 6G.

Ljubljana – The national Agency for Communication Networks and Services (AKOS) has published a call for a public auction of 5G frequencies. Those interested have until 1 February to submit their bids, while the auction is expected to take place in March or April.

OTE said on Thursday it had launched its 5G services in Athens and other big cities. The group, which is 46% owned and managed by Deutsche Telekom, said that its mobile business, Cosmote, was the first to provide its subscribers with 5G offerings in Athens, Thessaloniki and other cities at speeds exceeding 1 gigabit per second.

Greece has raised 372.26 million euros ($453.78 million) from granting rights for the use of different bands for the development of 5G networks, its telecoms regulator (EETT) said on Wednesday.

Wednesday sees the start of the state auction of bandwidth for the development of fifth-generation telecommunication networks (5G) in Greece, but the state-of-the-art services to subscribers will also come at an added cost.

The fifth generation of mobile telecommunications (5G), which Greece moves a step closer to on Wednesday with the auction of available bandwidth, is based on higher frequencies and on a greater section of the frequency spectrum, allowing for data to reach a higher number of appliances compared to the past, and faster too.

The tender for the auction of the fifth-generation wireless telecommunication network (5G) frequencies may be scheduled for this Wednesday, but the question is how fast this fast technology can roll out across Greece.

Ljubljana – Telecommunications company T-2 has launched a pilot 5G network at its headquarters in Ljubljana on Wednesday to test the equipment and the services it intends to offer once it has acquired a frequency spectrum at an incoming national auction.
