Denmark set to welcome new king after historic abdication

Denmark's Crown Prince Frederik will become king on Sunday after the unprecedented abdication of his mother Queen Margrethe, with more than 100,000 Danes expected to pour into Copenhagen's streets for the historic event.

The 55-year-old future monarch is hugely popular in Denmark, with 82 percent of Danes saying in a recent poll they think he will make a good king.

Japan Has a New Emperor

Naruhito became the new emperor of Japan at midnight on Wednesday, taking on the world's oldest monarchy after the historic abdication of his father, Akihito.

Japan also begins the new imperial era of Reeva or "beautiful harmony" that will last, while Naruhito, 59, today, remains on the throne.

Queen Elizabeth 'Will Abdicate in Three Years

The Queen will abdicate in three year's time and make Charles king, it has been claimed.

Her Majesty will step down at the age of 95 letting her son take over as Prince Regent while she is still alive, The Sun reports.

Queen Elizabeth, at 92, is the oldest and longest-serving monarch following her coronation in 1952.
