The leader of ISIL group blew himself up along with members of his family as American forces raided his Syria hideout Thursday, the U.S. said the second time in three years the United States has taken out a leader of the violent group that has been struggling for resurgence with deadly attacks in the region.

Turkish intelligence helped Iraq capture a senior ISIL leader who had been hiding out in northwestern Syria, three security sources said on Oct. 12, in an operation that points to closer cooperation against remnants of the jihadist group.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Nov. 12 that the United States knows the location of the third in command to ISIL leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who killed himself last month during a U.S.-led raid.

The U.S. knows "almost nothing" about the man who has succeeded Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi to lead the ISIL terrorist organization, a senior State Department official said on Nov. 6.

The Trump administration released video footage on Oct. 30 of the raid that led to the death of former ISIL leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the world's most wanted man, was believed on Oct. 27 to have been killed in a U.S. special operation in northwest Syria.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights told Reuters on July 11 that it had "confirmed information" that Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has been killed.

According to a spokesman of the Iraqi Defence Ministry, Abdul Rahman Mustafa Mohammed, also known as Abu Alaa al-Afri, was inside a mosque in Tal Afar, which was targeted.
