Synoikismoi | Elefsina | June 9-28

A festival within the ongoing Eleusis European Capital of Culture 2023 program, Synoikismoi, named after the Greek word for an amalgamation of tribes, villages or towns, celebrates the western Attica city and its denizens. Using different venues across Elefsina, the multimedia event features dance, music, theater, performance art, food and much more.

Rizes Fest | Athens | June 8

Visiting the capital for the first time, Rizes (Roots) Fest will be on at the City of Athens' Technopolis cultural complex (athens-technopolis.gr) on June 8, with three acts from different parts of the country. Digging deep into the archives, the festival celebrates traditional Greek folk music and dances in the spirit of the classic panigiri.

Scientists say 50 beaches are clean, 7 are not in southern Attica

Scientists from the Center for Ecological Research published on Thursday their annual evaluation of the beaches in the southern coast of Attica.

The microbial analyzes in seawater taken from 50 beaches from Piraeus port to Vouliagmeni showed that 43 are clean but seven are unsafe.

Consitutional lawyer dismisses Kasidiaris’ ploy to evade election ban

A constitutional lawyer dismissed on Thursday a claim by jailed former Golden Dawn deputy leader Ilias Kasidiaris that he could run in the next elections with a coalition of independent candidates, saying it is another effort to bypass a court ban on his party and candidacy. 

Bear spotted roaming near Thessaloniki

Local residents at a district east of Thessaloniki were warned about a rogue bear that was spotted roaming the region on Wednesday.

According to the Pilea-Chortiatis municipality's announcement, eye-witnesses saw the animal right below the radar on the path to Kissos, in the Makedonomachon area, near the park of Agia Paraskevi.

Refugees rescued from rocky Lesvos shore 

Two female refugees were rescued in a remote location in the wider area of Kapi on the eastern Aegean island of Lesvos on Sunday morning. 

Another nine people were found on Saturday afternoon in the area, but the two women could not be rescued from the rocky shore. 

The two women were extricated by police and fire brigade forces and were taken to Mytilene Hospital. 

Small illegal building on Mykonos beach demolished

Authorities on the island of Mykonos, southern Greece, demolished on Thursday a small structure built illegally on a beach on the northern coast. 

The building, a small square cement structure with a window door, surrounded by a reed fence, was located on Mersini beach. It had been recorded as illegal and issued a demolition order since 2016, but no action had been taken.
