Number of Syrian Refugees Surpasses Four Million - UN

The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced that the number of Syrians fleeing war and persecution has now surpassed four million.

This has made the Syrian conflict the worst crisis for almost a quarter of a century, while Syrian refugees represent the biggest refugee population from a single conflict in a generation.

The Mediterranean region, one of the oldest trade routes and centers of attraction for centuries, faces a serious terrorism threat, which has triggered a huge migrant and refugee influx to European countries. The ongoing developments will lead to the region?s fall in disfavor in economic, trade and tourism terms, as what happened centuries ago. 

137 000 Migrants Crossed Mediterranean Sea into Europe in First Half of 2015

According to the latest report of UNHCR, which was released on Wednesday, 137 000 crossed the Mediterranean Sea into Europe in the first half of 2015.

A large majority of the people making the dangerous sea crossing between January and June were fleeing war, conflict or persecution, making the current Mediterranean crisis primarily a refugee crisis.

Croatia to Take Share of EU Refugee Burden

Croatian Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic on Thursday said his country is willing to accept a share of the 40,000 refugees, mainly from Syria and Eritrea, who recently arrived in Greece and Italy, which Brussels wants distributed round the EU.

Milanovic made the offer ahead of an EU summit dominated by migration issues and the Greek crisis.
