The European Council has proposed an air traffic ban on Belarus amid outrage over the arrest of opposition journalist Roman Protasevich, after a Ryanair flight he was travelling on was forced to make an emergency landing in Minsk.

The ban will prevent Belarusian airlines from flying in the airspace of the 27 EU member states and prevent them from landing at airports in the EU.

Six Turkish planes violated the national airspace

Turkish jets violated Greek airspace on Wednesday for the first time after 26 days, with several F-16 fighter jets entering Athens' Flight Information Region (FIR) without submitting a flight plan, according to the Hellenic National Defence General Staff (GEETHA).

Between 3 and 4 p.m., pairs of jets flew three times over Oinouses, four times over Panagia and one northeast of Chios.

Turkey on May 14 defended its decision to deny overflight clearance to a plane carrying medical aid to the Greek Cypriot Administration (GCA).

Turkey refused a Greek Cyprus-bound aircraft that took off from China to fly across its airspace due to "standard restrictions," said the Turkish Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hami Aksoy on May 14.

A pair of Turkish fighter jets entered Athens' Flight Information Region (FIR) without submitting a flight plan on Wednesday and flew over the islet of Farmakonisi in the eastern Aegean.

The airspace violation was recorded at 1.58 p.m. at 25,000 feet.

They were chased off by Greek air force pilots in line with international rules of engagement. 

Turkey's "defenses and are not weak" and it will "not tolerate" any purported violations of its sovereign rights, Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said on Thursday, accusing Greece of breaching international law by keeping troops on the islands of the eastern Aegean.

On Tuesday, the Chamber of Deputies unanimously adopted a bill on Romania's Airspace Code.
