Dozens Dead in Indonesia after Drinking Bootleg Liquor

JAKARTA (Reuters) - More than 50 Indonesians have died and many have been become sick and hospitalised since last week after consuming homemade alcohol tainted with various ingredients including mosquito repellent, authorities said on Tuesday.

Police have detained at least 12 men in the capital, Jakarta, and a neighbouring province on suspicion of making and selling the liquor.

"I admit I was shocked when my son came back drunk on Saturday night. He's only 15 years old and had been out with friends, just as on many other weekends. He wasn't late, but he was a mess. They'd been to a club in Glyfada, where they had beers and shots! How could they serve alcohol to kids?" one shocked father told Kathimerini on the condition of anonymity.

Alcohol smuggling gang unraveled

Police in Piraeus say they have unraveled a gang that smuggled large quantities of alcohol from European Union countries and other areas to Greece.

It said on Thursday that it has arrested three people - two aged 45 and another 55 - and is looking for another three suspects - 66, 30 and 34.
