One dead, 10 hospitalized from bootleg alcohol

One person has died and 10 others have been hospitalized after consuming bootleg alcohol in the Çorlu district of the northwestern province of Tekirdağ.

Some 11 people from different neighborhoods of the district fell sick and went to the hospital overnight.

It emerged that those people consumed bootleg rakı. Four of those admitted to the hospital were intubated.

At least 30 people have died and 20 more have been hospitalized in the last two weeks in Istanbul after consuming bootleg alcohol.

The victims, most of the citizens of Turkmenistan living in Istanbul, rubbed the toxic substance on their bodies before consuming it in an attempt to protect themselves against the coronavirus, according to the police sources.

Turkey removed tariffs on ethyl alcohol imports amid coronavirus pandemic, announcing the decision in the Official Gazette on March 25.

The move aims to support production of disinfectant and cologne, traditional ethanol-based scented disinfectant in Turkey.

The tariff on bulk ethyl alcohol imports was 10 percent.
