Athens sees heavy traffic in run-up to Christmas
Heavy traffic has been reported in the center of Athens and on other major thoroughfares in the Attica region in the run-up to Christmas.
The streets around Syntagma, Omonia, the Kallimarmaro Stadium, as well as on Vasilissis Sofias Avenue up to the intersection with Alexandras Avenue, were among the most affected.

Fire breaks out in downtown Athens public park
A fire broke out Tuesday evening in Pedion tou Areos, one of Athens' largest public parks.
The fire, near Alexandras Avenue, may have been sparked by a flare, according to witnesses.
The fire service reported that the fire was quickly contained. Police also responded at the scene.

A ‘self-managed commune’ next to police headquarters
For thousands of drivers and pedestrians traveling daily on Alexandras Avenue near the Panathinaikos soccer stadium, the view of the refugee apartment blocks has remained largely unchanged for at least 40 years: faded ocher facades, rickety balconies, peeling walls, tattered curtains, scattered satellite dishes and political and soccer slogans.
Violent incidents rock Exarchia and Gyzi neighborhoods in Athens
A group of roughly thirty individuals launched an assault on a riot police contingent at Harilaou Trikoupi Square in downtown Exarchia at 1:50 a.m.
They hurled approximately ten Molotov cocktails, alongside rocks and various other projectiles, at the officers before fleeing into nearby alleys.
Athens’ mayor: Work on new Panathinaikos stadium in Votanikos to begin in days
The new Panathinaikos stadium in Votanikos and the redevelopment project at the team's old stadium on Alexandras Avenue will be ready by 2026, Athens Mayor Haris Doukas has said.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, the mayor said that the timetable for the completion of both stadiums is binding since funding will be lost otherwise.
Traffic restrictions announced for Erdogan visit
Traffic restrictions will be in place in downtown Athens on Thursday for the official visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, police have announced.
Measures include the gradual and temporary restriction of circulation traffic, and a ban on stopping and parking at several sections of the road network.

Ministry refutes bed bug hoax in Athens’ Exarchia district
Greece's Health Ministry on Tuesday dismissed as a "complete lie" an announcement taped to several buildings in Athens' central Exarchia district warning of bed bug infestations.
The announcement appeared on Tuesday morning taped on various buildings along Harilaou Trikoupi and Komninon streets, as well as on Alexandras Avenue.
Gradual road closures planned ahead of 1973 student uprising anniversary
Gradual road closures will come into effect ahead of the 50th anniversary of the Athens Polytechnic Uprising, to be commemorated with a big rally across the city centre on Friday.
Drugs found on local trapper
A well-known trapper, who was arrested Saturday with 122 grams of cocaine and 2,350 euros, was granted conditional release on Monday.
According to state broadcaster ERT, on the night of his arrest, the 27-year-old was with another person at the junction of Alexandras Avenue and Mavromataion Street at Pedion to Areos park in central Athens.
