National leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Viorica Dancila congratulated Teodor Melescanu on Tuesday on being elected chairman of the Romanian Senate, adding that the vote in the Senate indicates that PSD still has a majority in Parliament. "Congratulations to Mr Teodor Melescanu on being elected chairman of Romania's Senate!

Senate President Teodor Melescanu stated, after being elected in office, that his objective is to "regain the citizens' respect and confidence" in Parliament. "First of all, I want to thank all those who voted me and I want to give assurances to those who didn't vote me or who even attacked me, that I will be a balanced President.

Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE) Senator Teodor Melescanu was elected President of the Romanian Senate in a run-off on Tuesday having garnered 73 votes for in a plenary session to his opponent Alina Gheorghiu's 59. Of 136 attending senators, 134 voted and two votes were invalidated.

The opposition Save Romania Union (USR) PLUS Alliance has suggested to President Klaus Iohannis, the National Liberal Party (PNL), the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR), the national minority group, Pro Romania and the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE) a pact on early election, USR national leader Dan Barna said on Monday at a news conference.

The social-democrats will gather on Monday, at the meeting of the National Executive Committee (CExN), to discuss the Government's situation and solutions for unlocking its activity, after President Klaus Iohannis refused to appoint the interim ministers, and also for the Presidency of the Senate.

Chairman of the People's Movement Party (PMP) Eugen Tomac says that leader of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE) Calin Popescu-Tariceanu has fallen into a trap, as he was put to shame by Prime Minister Viorica Dancila, who leaves him without a party and without MPs as well, as the latter are desperately defecting to PSD in exchange for public offices.

Prime Minister Viorica Dancila said on Monday that President Klaus Iohannis had told her that he would give her an answer "in a short time" about the proposals she made for the portfolios that were held by ALDE (Alliance of Liberals and Democrats, ed. n.), and added that the Government is not blocked.

The Chamber of Deputies and the Senate are starting today their second ordinary parliamentary session of the year. In the first meeting of each chamber, a new composition of their standing bureaus is elected, including their deputy chairs, secretaries, and treasurers.

Pro Romania and the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE) lodged, on Sunday, with the Central Electoral Bureau (BEC), the protocol for setting up the Electoral Alliance between the two parties in order to support the independent candidate Mircea Diaconu in the presidential elections. The protocol was submitted by the two co-chairs of the Alliance, Norica Nicolai and Sorin Cimpeanu.

The Social Democratic Party's (PSD) National Executive Committee (CExN) decided in Mamaia, on Saturday, to send President Klaus Iohannis to court for having stated that the Government is corrupt, PSD Chairwoman Viorica Dancila announced.
