The Director of the Executive Agency for Vines and Wine Krasimir Koev said that Bulgarians have drunk around 100 million litres of wine in 2014.

Wine producers in Bulgaria will be allowed to add sugar to boost the level of alcohol, according to Krasimir Koev, Director of the Executive Agency on Vine and Wine (EAVW).

The EAVW has authorized the measure in response to a request to local wine producers.

The Turkish wine sector is suffering from marketing restrictions brought about by new alcohol regulations, as the country’s wine makers continue to lose ground against newcomers in the market such as Georgia, Moldova and Israel.

Bulgaria will receive EUR 133 M from the European Union, which will subsidize vine-growing and wine production under a new operational program.

Krasimir Koev, who heads Bulgaria's Vine and Wine Agency, said that the new program was signed Wednesday, the website Expert.bg reported.

Upon receiving EU funds, new vines are to be planted across Bulgaria.
