One police commissioner, one police injured in PKK attack in Turkey's east

One police commissioner and a fellow police officer have been wounded in an attack in the eastern province of Batman after suspected members of the PKK staged an attack on a car the undercover cops were in, late in the day.

Militants opened fired with long-barreled rifles around 3:45 p.m., while the police officers were driving down a road to the historic village of Hasankeyf.

Turkish artist Fikret Otyam dies

Famous Turkish painter, journalist and author Fikret Otyam died on Aug. 9 at the age of 89 in the southern province of Antalya.

Otyam, who had been receiving treatment for renal failure for some time, was taken to hospital in January.
His wife, Filiz Otyam, said the renowned artist would be buried on Aug. 10 in Antalya.
