Apple ends Samsung's 12-year run as world's top smartphone seller

Apple's iPhone for the first time became the world's biggest selling smartphone after rival Samsung's 12-year run as leader, data have showed.

According to data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) released on Jan. 16, the iPhone stole Samsung's crown in 2023 with 234.6 million units sold, compared to the South Korean firm's 226.6 million units.

Epic Games wins US court fight with Google

Epic Games, the maker of Fortnite, won a major US court battle against Google on Monday when a jury decided that the search engine giant wields illegal monopoly power through its Android app store.

Epic sued Google and Apple in 2020, accusing the tech titans of abusing control of their respective shops selling apps and other digital content on mobile devices.

Google planning quantum tech centre in Ljubljana

The US tech giant Google is planning to launch a quantum technologies centre in Ljubljana, Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation Minister Igor Papič told the STA on 30 May. Doctoral students could start this autumn or next year at the latest. Several hundred engineers are expected to graduate annually.

Google fined $162 mn by Indian watchdog over market dominance 

Google has been fined more than $160 million by India's anti-trust watchdog after a probe found the tech behemoth was abusing its commanding position in the local smartphone market.

The company's Android mobile operating system is by far the dominant player in India and is run on 95 percent of all the country's smartphones.
