Fishermen hunt veined rapa whelks in Bosphorus to export to Far East

Every day, fishermen are going out fishing in the Bosphorus to hunt veined rapa whelks, large sea snails that have been touted widely as an antidote to cancer and are popular in Far Eastern countries.

Taner Yıldız, an academic from Istanbul University, told daily Hürriyet that the rapa whelks were significantly valuable, saying their export market value is around $20 million.

Newly detected fish-dwelling parasite named after Turkey’s Adana province

A parasite found dwelling on garfish species in Mediterranean waters, home to an exceptional diversity of marine life, has been named after the southern province of Adana after it was detected in the waters near the province's Yumurtalık district.

"This parasite will be called 'Caligus Adanensis' from now on," said Argun Akif Özak, an academic from the Çukurova University.

Caracal photographed in Muğla

A caracal, which is in danger of extinction, has been photographed by motion-triggered camera, placed by in the field by Yasin İlemin, an academic in the western province of Muğla.

İlemin, who named the wild cat "Timur," shared its photo on his social media account, drawing great interest.

Ljubljana Zoo welcomes baby chimp

Ljubljana – Ljubljana Zoo has welcomed a newcomer to its midst as a baby chimpanzee named Tai was born in mid-January. Crested geckos, black-tufted marmosets, a species of New World monkeys, kangaroos and meerkats have also seen the arrival of newborns, the zoo has said.
