Apostolos Tzitzikostas is expected to take on the transport portfolio in the new EU Commission, Politico reported on Monday.

Apostolos Tzitzikostas, governor of Central Macedonia, met with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at Maximos Mansion on Thursday following his nomination as EU commissioner.

The meeting between Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the Governor of Central Macedonia, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, who will be the new Greek Commissioner in the European Commission, has been underway since 18:00.

Greece will recommend the Governor of Central Macedonia, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, for the position of Commissioner in the 2024-29 Commission, government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis said on Thursday during a press briefing.

Regional Governor of Central Macedonia Apostolos Tzitzikostas is proposed as Greece’s Commissioner to the European Commission. The official announcement was made a few minutes ago by government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis, who noted that Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has already informed European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

The region of Central Macedonia will have its own exhibition stand at this month's Posidonia Sea Tourism Forum, which aims to promote its unique historical and cultural heritage and highlight its rich tourism product comprising mythical mountains, legendary archaeological sites, sandy beaches, crystal-clear seas and picturesque lakes and rivers.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis assured authorities in northern Greece on Tuesday that coronavirus restrictions on the country's land borders would be lifted entirely within the next few weeks, facilitating the arrival of tourists by road.
