Strong quake strikes eastern Taiwan, Japan issues tsunami alert

A 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan's southeastern coast on Sunday, the US Geological Survey said, prompting Japan to issue a tsunami warning.

The quake hit at 2:44 pm (0644 GMT) about 50 kilometres (30 miles) north of the city of Taitung at a depth of 10 kilometres, the USGS said.

New Zealand Shaken by Powerful Earthquake - Tsunami Alert Stated

A powerful earthquake has struck off the east coast of New Zealand's North Island, shaking residents of New Zealand biggest cities. The power was registered at a magnitude of over 7.

A tsunami warning was issued for an area of 300 kilometres around the epicentre, and the national disaster authority said the first waves may have already hit the coast around East Cape.

5.5 Magnitude Earthquake in Venezuela

A 5.5 magnitude earthquake occurred 18 kilometres from the city of Araya, near the coast of Venezuela. No injuries or damages were reported as a result of the quake.

Shock waves were observed at a depth of just 5.9 kilometres in the sea, more than 200 kilometres from the capital of the Latin American state of Caracas.
