US ship finishes neutralizing Syria's chemical arms off Crete

A specially equipped U.S. ship has finished neutralizing all 600 metric tons of the most dangerous of Syria's chemical weapons components surrendered to the international community this year to avert threatened air strikes, the Pentagon said on Monday.
ISIL’s Baghdadi orders Muslims to ’obey’ him
The leader of the Islamic State of Syria and the Levant (ISIL), Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, purportedly ordered all Muslims to obey him in a video released July 5 on social media.
The hitherto elusive Baghdadi, who on June 29 proclaimed a "caliphate" straddling Syria and Iraq, made his appeal in a sermon delivered on Friday in the militant-held northern Iraqi city of Mosul.

Former UN mediator Brahimi blames world neglect of Syria for Iraq unrest
Former U.N. and Arab League envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi said Sunday the unrest sweeping Iraq stemmed from the international community's negligence of the conflict in neighbouring Syria.
Jihadist-led militants launched a lightning offensive on June 9, advancing to within 80 kilometers of Baghdad's city limits and bringing Iraq's security forces to the brink of collapse.

Former U.N. envoy for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi has warned that the war-torn country was heading toward becoming âanother Somaliaâ ruled by warlords, in an interview published in a German weekly this weekend.
UN Envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi Resigns
Lakhdar Brahimi, the UN-Arab League mediator who has for months tried to put an end to Syria's ongoing civil war, announced his resignation.
The decision would be in force from May 31, as UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon reported in a joint press-conference with the veteran Algerian diplomat Brahimi on Tuesday.
