Istanbul police have caught a key suspect who played a role along with her husband, a key figure of the FETÖ terrorist organization, in the assassination of the Russian ambassador to Ankara in 2016.

Turkish, Russian, Iranian, and Syrian deputy foreign ministers will meet in Russia's capital Moscow on March 15-16 for talks on Syria, according to diplomatic sources.

Within the scope of mediation efforts, Ankara has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Turkey for a face-to-face meeting amid rising tension in the region, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Jan. 20.

A Turkish court on April 18 concluded its reasoned decision on the assassination of Russian Ambassador to Ankara Andrey Karlov.

In a detailed verdict, the court reasoned that Mevlüt Mert Altıntaş, an off-duty police officer who killed the ambassador in 2016 at a time of the reconciliation of Turkish-Russian relations, was a secret member of FETÖ.

A Turkish court on March 9 sentenced five suspects to life in jail over the 2016 murder of Russian ambassador Andrei Karlov in Ankara, state news agency Anadolu reported.

Six other suspects were acquitted while seven others were convicted of membership of an armed terrorist group.

The Ankara prosecutor's office on March 5 sought life imprisonment for defendants accused of taking part in the assassination of a former Russian ambassador to Turkey in 2016, state-run Anadolu Agency reported.

The assassination of Russia's ambassador to Turkey in 2016 sought to sabotage the normalization of ties between the two countries as well as a cooperation deal struck in 2001, an expert told Anadolu Agency.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said on July 24 that an attack earlier in the day on a Belarusian diplomat was not politically motivated.       

Two diplomats and an administrative officer in the Turkish Embassy in Washington are under investigation over "suspected links to FETÖ."
