Aegean Airlines has secured another slot at London's Heathrow airport and is adding to its schedule a fourth daily flight from Athens to the UK's busiest international hub, it said on Tuesday.

The new flight will operate every day throughout the year except on Saturdays, leaving Athens at 4 p.m. local time and London/Heathrow at 7 p.m. local time.

Greek and foreign airlines are investing even more this year in the strong prospects of Greek tourism, as well as of Athens International Airport.

Athens International Airport (AIA) will implement a three-phase investment plan to increase passenger service capacity in the coming years.

The company that has the airport concession contract until 2046 will proceed in February with the public registration of its share capital through the sale of the 30% stake currently held by TAIPED.

Greece has begun preparations for the sale of a 30% stake in Athens International Airport through an initial public offering (IPO) and separate agreements with shareholders AviaAlliance and the Copelouzos family, Athens International Airport said on Monday.

Aegean Airlines offered the biggest number of seats in a year ever in 2023, also setting a new passenger record, while occupancy also improved from 2022.

Last year, the airline offered 20% more seats, which amounted to 18.5 million, i.e. 800,000 more than in 2019. It carried 15.5 million passengers, a number that is 26% higher than in 2022.

A draft law marking the completion of the necessary institutional prerequisites so that Athens International Airport (AIA) shares can be traded on the Athens Stock Exchange was tabled in Parliament on Friday.

An 18-year-old man and a 52-year-old woman were killed on Thursday morning when their cars smashed into each other on the road linking Spata to Artemida, east of Athens.

A 30-year-old woman was arrested on Tuesday afternoon at the Athens' Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport for drug trafficking. 

According to the police, an investigation in cooperation with the DEA office of the US embassy located the woman after she landed in Greece on a flight from Switzerland.

A total of 37 kilograms of cannabis was located in the woman's luggage.
