Athens ring road exit to airport to be closed for several hours

The exit to Athens International Airport on the Attiki Odos ring road will be closed to traffic from 10 p.m. on Tuesday night until 6 a.m. on Wednesday morning, the highway's operator has said.

Exit 7 from Dimokratias Avenue in Acharnes towards the airport will be closed as maintenance is carried out on that stretch of the road, the company said.

Kifissos riverbed damage stokes concern

Serious damage to the underground bed of the Kifissos River in Athens has been identified by a team of speleologists. 

The team was conducting an underground expedition and had reached a section beneath the Kifissou KTEL bus terminal, when they came across a hill of trash and debris as well as a lake that may have formed as a result of the bottom being destroyed. 

Traffic at Athens International Airport soars in July

Arrivals and departures at Athens International Airport came to almost 3.3 million in July, 16.1% higher than a year ago, the airport administration announced Wednesday. Traffic was also 10.5% higher than 2019, the last pre-Covid-19 year, a sign that 2023 tourist arrivals will exceed that record-breaking season. International traffic rose 17.7% year-on-year and domestic traffic 12.7%.

European tourists seek to avoid overcrowding

Europeans are increasingly choosing to travel to destinations or periods of the year with less crowds, as they seek better services, new experiences and lower prices.

As a result, July and August are apparently showing fewer projected arrivals compared to last year in popular destinations in Greece, such as Mykonos and Santorini.
