Strike causes traffic chaos in Athens

Transport workers in Athens are on Wednesday taking part in the second of three 24-hour strikes to object to legislation that will allow the transport organization to make commercial use of stations.

Metro, electric railway (ISAP) and tram workers are taking part in the walk-out, leaving a build-up of traffic in the Greek capital.

A video of a horrific accident on the Athens-Lamia national highway on Sunday, which left four people dead, has gone viral, exposing the dangerous problem of speeding on Greek roads.

The video showed a Porsche, driven by Giorgos Vakakis, the son of Jumbo toy store owner Apostolos Vakakis, plowing into a parked car and roadside restroom, causing an explosion.

Athens commuters are set for fresh travel disruptions on Wednesday and Friday due to two planned 24-hour strikes by workers on the Athens metro, tram and the Piraeus-Kifissia electric railway (ISAP).

The strikes will mean services on the metro, tram and ISAP are totally suspended on Wednesday and Friday though will operate normally on Thursday.
