The citizens of Athens and the tourists who chose Greece’s capital for their Christmas holiday enjoyed a spectacular firework display under the Acropolis which lit up the night sky.

Ermou Street in Athens inundated with crowds on last Sunday of shopping (pics)

Ermou Street was inundated with crowds on the last Sunday of the year, a shopping day thanks to the extended shop opening times on December 27. Athenians took advantage of the extended shopping hours that run to 6 p.m. though some department stores close at 8 p.m.

Shop owners found work satisfactory as people rushed for some last-minute shopping.

 

 

 

Athens covered in a veil of smog from use of fireplaces (pics)

A veil of smog has covered Athens again. As temperatures soar in Athens to single-digit figures, a number of people are seeking warmth – especially in the northern suburbs – by lighting up their fireplaces oblivious to warnings issued by the Environment Ministry. Use of fireplaces have resulted in pockets of smog hovering over certain distructs.

Doctors of the World build Christmas tree made up of the milk of love

Doctors of the World set up Christmas trees of milk at three points around Greece – Thessaloniki (Aristotelous Square), Athens (Athens Uni, Panepistimiou Street) and Crete (Chania).

Citizens helped build a tree of evaporated milk cans as part of the medical charity’s Christmas campaign.
