Hurricane Ida is the fourth and to-date strongest storm of the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season

Flash flooding caused by the remnants of Hurricane Ida killed at least 44 people in four northeastern U.S. states overnight into Sept. 2, including several who perished in basements during the "historic" weather event officials blamed on climate change.

More than 1 million homes and businesses in Louisiana and Mississippi, including all of New Orleans, were left without power on Monday, as Ida, one of the most powerful hurricanes ever to hit the US mainland, pushed through on Sunday, AP reported. The damage was so extensive that officials warned it could be weeks before the power grid was repaired.

Louisiana communities battered by Hurricane Ida faced a new danger as they began the massive task of clearing debris and repairing damage from the storm: the possibility of weeks without power in the stifling, late-summer heat.

Hurricane Ida blasted ashore Sunday as one of the most powerful storms ever to hit the U.S., knocking out power to all of New Orleans, blowing roofs off buildings and reversing the flow of the Mississippi River as it rushed from the Louisiana coast into one of the nation's most important industrial corridors.

U.S. media report that at least one person was killed, as well as that numerous parts of Louisiana were left without electricity. Many seek help and rescue because their houses are surrounded by water. There is a danger of flooding.

Hurricane Ida knocked out power to all of New Orleans and inundated coastal Louisiana communities on a deadly path through the Gulf Coast that was still unfolding and promised more destruction.
