Thousands Took to the Streets of Barcelona Calling for Unity

Thousands of supporters of Spain's unity took to the streets of Barcelona yesterday, chanting "For coexistence, for democracy, for Catalonia!" "Enough!", Referring to street protests following the sentencing of separatist leaders, the Spanish daily Mundo reported in its electronic edition.
 

Thousands converge on Barcelona for fifth day of Catalan protests

Hundreds of thousands of pro-independence supporters from across Spain's northeastern region of Catalonia are expected to pour into Barcelona on Oct. 18, as unions called for a general strike on the fifth day of protests following the jailing of nine separatist leaders.
Many of those walking towards the Catalan capital were waving pro-independence flags, Reuters witnesses said.

Record Storms in Spain - Deaths Have Been Reported

Two people have died in floods caused by heavy rainfall in southeastern Spain, BTA reported.

"The death of two people has been confirmed," the emergency services of the Castile-La Mancha Autonomous Region said on Twitter. The car of the two victims was taken by the stranded waters of the village of Caudete. The dead man was 61 years old and his sister 51 years old.

Catalonia's Carles Puigdemont Opts Out of Presidency

Former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont has nominated a political newcomer to be the region's new president.

In a video from his self-imposed exile in Berlin, Mr Puigdemont named Quim Torra to be a candidate for the presidency of the region.

Mr Torra is an MP from Mr Puigdemont's pro-independence party, Together for Catalonia (JxCat).
