Turkish scientists work on drug to prevent cancer

In the light of the previous studies of Türkiye's Nobel laureate in chemistry, Aziz Sancar, Turkish scientists have conducted a study that could prevent the development of cancer with drugs.

The absence of the p53 gene, which is called the "guardian angel" against cancer and prevents the uncontrolled proliferation of cells, causes 50 percent of all cancers.

Turkish Nobel laureate develops new method for cancer treatment

Türkiye's Nobel laureate in chemistry, Aziz Sancar, has conducted a study on a new method in the treatment of brain tumors that can be applied without damaging nerve cells.

"We carried out research on the fact that the EdU molecule activates the repair mechanism in intact DNA as if it was damaged," Sancar told daily Cumhuriyet.

Turkish-American scientist Aziz Sancar, the winner of the 2015 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, has advised cancer patients to stay in Turkey and not go to the U.S., stressing the importance of family support in overcoming cancer. 

"I tell cancer patients: 'Do not come to America,'" Sancar said on May 8 during a program broadcast on the U.S.-based Voice of America radio station.
