Russian media have published video footage showing a NATO jet flying along Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu's plane.

Sweden plans to station troops on the strategic Baltic island of Gotland, as Russia has increased its military activity in the region.

Permanent military presence has been absent from Gotland, which is Sweden's largest island, for a period of ten years, the Financial Times reports.

Poland and Finland reported "unprecedented" Russian naval and air force activities in the Baltic Sea region this week.

Poland's Defence Minister Tomasz Siemoniak, quoted by the BBC, said most of the activity was in international waters and airspace and Sweden was the country most affected.

Sweden beefed up its military presence in the Stockholm archipelago on Saturday to scour its waters for "foreign underwater activity", a mobilisation of Swedish ships, troops and helicopters unseen since the Cold War.

President Traian Basescu on Sunday said in a statement at the presidential Cotroceni Palace that after the NATO summit in Newport, Romania too will have a plan of contingency and action plans in case of some attack by land, air or water.

Joint drills enhance military co-operation and mutual confidence

Russian Baltic Fleet, Airborne Troops and Air Force have started drills in the Kaliningrad Region, the Russian Defense Ministry said, Tuesday.

The military exercise is taking place at the same time as the international drills Saber Strike 2014 and BALTOPS 2014 that started in Europe.
