The number of people killed in twin car bombings in the Somali capital Mogadishu, claimed by Al-Shabaab Islamists, has risen to 100, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said on Sunday.

"So far, the number of people who died has reached 100 and 300 are wounded, and the number for both the death and wounded continues to increase," he said after visiting the blast location.

Somalis anxiously waited to know the fate of their missing relatives on Sunday as emergency workers attempted to clear debris after a deadly 30-hour siege by Al-Shabaab jihadists at a hotel in the capital Mogadishu.

A car bomb exploded at a checkpoint in Somalia's capital on Jan. 8 morning, killing three people and wounding six others, a local official said. The al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab extremist group quickly claimed responsibility.

A suicide truck bomb targeted a busy security checkpoint in Somalia's capital on Dec. 28 morning, killing at least 61 people, authorities said. It was one of the deadliest attacks in Mogadishu in recent memory.

The attack took place at the junction called Ex-Control Afgoye in a southwestern suburb of the capital during the morning rush hour of Dec. 28.

The death toll from Friday's bomb attacks in Somalia's capital Mogadishu continues to rise.

AP reports that Somali hospital and police sources say the death toll has risen to 53 with over 100 injured.

Somalia's Islamist group al Shabaab has claimed responsibility for an attack in which a U.S. commando was killed and four others were wounded when they came under fire in the country.

Islamist al-Shabaab militants rammed a car bomb into the gate of a hotel and stormed inside, killing at least 13 people in Somalia's capital Mogadishu on Jan. 25, police said.

Gunfire rang out as fighters entered Dayah Hotel, which is popular with politicians. A second blast shook the area shortly afterwards, injuring several people nearby.

Six people, including one Turkish national, were killed when unidentified gunmen attacked a minibus carrying workers to a Turkish-run hospital in the Somali capital Mogadishu on March 30, the Turkish Foreign Ministry has said. 

The gunmen, who were in a car, opened fire at the minibus as it passed in Mogadishu's Hodan district. 

Somalia's Al-Qaeda-linked Shebab insurgents killed at least 25 people on Feb. 20 in an attack on a popular hotel in the capital Mogadishu where government ministers and officials were holding Friday prayers.
