Battle of Salamis

Two men were arrested for espionage on Sunday night after they were caught wandering inside the Salamis Naval Base, located in the northeastern part of the island of Salamina, about 16 kilometers west of Athens.

When the allied Greek cities found themselves facing the invading Persian Army in 480 BC, it was an existential battle between East and West. Greece, representing all the values of the West, as we know it today, used its "wooden walls" - its ships - to face the Eastern invaders.

An underwater ruin that could be the remains of a public building situated near the port of Salamis in antiquity – possibly one seen and mentioned by the traveler and geographer Pausanias in the 2nd century AD – is gradually emerging following an archaeological investigation of Ambelakia bay near the island.

Marinos Ritsoudis, who in 1999 refused to participate in NATO's bombing of Serbia, 18 years later says he is proud of that moment.

Speaking for the Belgrade-based daily Blic, the former Greek navy officer also said that it was "a fantastic feeling" to support Serbia "in the fight against all."

One of the oldest surviving works of ancient Greek drama, and the only one based on historical events, "The Persians," written by Aeschylus in 472 BC, chronicles the defeat of Persian arrogance and the triumph of the Greek spirit in the 480 BC Battle of Salamis.

Director Aris Binaris makes his Epidaurus debut in a Cyprus Theater Organization production of Aeschylus' tragedy "The Persians" at the ancient theater as part of the Greek Festival on Friday and Saturday, August 11-12. Music and sound are key elements in the director's take on the ancient play, laying emphasis on the dramatic high points.

Aristides Alafouzos was honored on Thursday at a funeral service at the Church of Aghios Dionysios Areopagitis in Kolonaki, central Athens, attended by his loved ones, friends, business associates and compatriots, fellow travelers on land and sea.

The Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports said the location where the Greek naval forces had gathered before the historic sea battle of Salamis against Persians in 480 BC had been discovered. The announcement said the location was most likely the commercial as well as the navy port of the island of Salamis in the classical ancient Greek era.
