Romanian-French pair Mihaela Buzarnescu / Alize Cornet qualified on Tuesday for the quarterfinals of the doubles event of the Gippsland Trophy (WTA 500) tennis tournament in Melbourne, with total prizes of 565,530 dollars, by defeating Hayley Carter (USA) / Luisa Stefani (Brazil) 6-3, 6-1. Buzarnescu and Cornet won in only 55 minutes versus the 6th seeds.
UPDATE/Romania's Halep advances to Madrid Open women's singles final
Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, world number three, on Friday advanced to the women's singles final at the 7,021,128-USD Madrid Open tournament after defeating Swiss Belinda Bencic, world number 18, in the semi-final 6-2 6-7 6-0. Halep, who will return to number one if winning the trophy, got a hard-fought victory after almost two hours of play (1 h 57 min).

Bulgaria's Pironkova Gains 7 Spots in Global Ranking
Tsvetana Pironkova, Bulgaria's highest-ranking female tennis player, has climbed up the Women Tennis Association (WTA)'s ranking after reaching the second round of the US Open.
Pironkova, with 941 points, now ranks 64th.
Earlier in September, a loss to Johanna Konta (UK) ousted her from US Open.
Bulgaria's Tsvetana Pironkova Suffers Defeat in Second Round in Sydney
The highest ranking Bulgarian female tennis player Tsvetana Pironkova completed her participation at the Apia International tournament which is taking place in Sydney.
In a match from the second round, Pironkova was defeated by Belinda Bencic from Switzerland with 3:6, 3:6.
Jankovic through to Charleston third round
CHARLESTON - Serbia's Jelena Jankovic has reached the third round of the Charleston WTA tennis tournament by beating Tatjana Maria 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-1 in the second round late Tuesday CET.
Jankovic, the current world number 17, and Maria, who ranks 13th, played an extraordinary match that featured as many as 13 break points won.

Jelena Jankovic through to Indian Wells Masters quarterfinal
INDIAN WELLS - Serbian female tennis player Jelena Jankovic qualified for the Masters 1000 quarterfinal in Indian Wells, California, as she defeated Belinda Bencic of Switzerland in the match early on Wednesday, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
Jankovic in 4th round in Indian Wells
INDIAN WELLS - Serbia's Jelena Jankovic is in the 4th round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, after beating Madison Keys of the US 5-7 6-4 6-3 on Monday.
This was Jankovic's second victory over Keys in their 3rd match against each other.

Jelena Jankovic through to Indian Wells third round
INDIAN WELLS - Serbia's Jelena Jankovic is through to the 3rd round of the Indian Wells WTA tournament after beating Lauren Davis of the United States 6-7 (5-7), 6-0, 6-4 early Sunday.
In the next round, Jankovic will face another American, Madison Keys, who defeated Klara Koukalova of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-2.
