With very few exceptions, Athens has by no means experienced the so-called "Bilbao phenomenon," which occurred in the Spanish city; namely a domino effect of changes that would improve the urban environment around its museums and large cultural sites.
Exhibition tracing origin of stone sculpture opens in Benaki
The Benaki Museum on Wednesday inaugurated an exhibition organized in cooperation with the University of Crete tracing the origins of stone sculpture and showcasing artifacts from Europe, Africa and the Middle East that are being shown to the Greek public for the first time.

Britain and Greece, from Lord Byron to John Craxton
The British Embassy in Athens and the Benaki Museum have launched a new collaborative initiative, with the "Grand Tour" exhibition. As part of this initiative, the UK Government Art Collection is loaning 17 pieces from the British Ambassador's Residence in Athens to the Benaki for display at its Ghika Gallery, through June 1, 2025.

The Benaki Museum (benaki.org) presents a retrospective exhibition in honor of the photographer Elli Sougioultzoglou-Seraidari, better known as Nelly's. Twenty-five years after her death, the museum is reintroducing the esteemed artist to a contemporary audience, displaying her multidimensional work.

Despina Geroulanou, a Benaki Museum Trustee, dies at 65
Despina Geroulanou, member of the Benaki Museum Board of Trustees and, recently, Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of 2023 Eleusis European Capital of Culture, has died at the age of 65.
The cause of death was lung disease; she had been hospitalized for a month.

The Benaki Museum (benaki.org) has prepared a series of interesting videos that provide a chronology of Greek history from Neolithic to modern times, stemming from its collections of antiquities, historical memorabilia and modern art. The videos are narrated in English and feature objects and images that illustrate the big and small events that shaped the different eras.

Benaki Museum plans artwork auction after revenues plunge amid the pandemic
The prominent Benaki Museum in Athens is fighting for its survival as the four months of closure imposed as part of the measures to contain the coronavirus pandemic in Greece had led to a monthly loss of revenue totalling about 400,000 euros.
KinderDocs | Athens | March 8
The Benaki Museum's Pireos Street annex presents the documentary "Open Window" in the context of the KinderDocs program. The documentary follows two young girls in India being introduced to the internet via their school's learning laboratory. It is English and Hindi and will be screened with Greek subtitles. There will be two projections on the same day at 12 noon and at 2 p.m.

Athenians: The Face of a City | Athens | To February 2
The Benaki Museum's Pireos Street annex is currently hosting an exhibition put together by Lifo magazine to celebrate the weekly free-press/city guide's 15th anniversary titled "Athenians: The Face of a City." The exhibition comprises more than 200 portraits, taken by distinguished Greek photographers, of people who have collaborated with Lifo over the years.
