Mediterranean boat carrying 500 migrants has disappeared, rescuers say

A boat carrying about 500 migrants, including a newborn baby and pregnant women, has disappeared in the central Mediterranean, two charities said on Friday.

Alarm Phone, a group that picks up calls from migrant vessels in distress, said it lost contact with the boat on Wednesday morning.

Turkish vessel on suspect course

A Hellenic Navy vessel participating in the European Union's Operation Irini to uphold the United Nations-imposed arms embargo on Libya was on Wednesday monitoring the movements of a Tanzanian-flagged Turkish ship suspected of carrying arms to the North African country.

Haftar seeks support in Greece

The commander of forces fighting the U.N.-supported government in war-torn Libya has begun meetings in Athens.

Khalifa Haftar met with Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias after arriving for a previously unannounced visit late on Jan. 16.

He will continue meetings with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Jan. 17 as well as with other senior Greek officials.

FM Dendias visiting Libya

Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias is visiting Libya, where he is expected to meet with Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, leader of the Libyan National Army fighting the UN-recognized Libyan government, Arab media report.

Dendias left earlier Sunday from the Elefsina military airport, headed to Benghazi.
