SKOPJE -- Three persons died in Macedonia during the past month as a consequence of infection with the Listeria bacteria.
Seven cases in all have been registered in the Balkan country in the same period of time.

Albanian tied to cannabis ring arrested
Police in Thessaloniki, northern Greece, have arrested a 31-year-old Albanian national in connection to a criminal ring believed to have smuggled large quantities of cannabis out of Greece.
Another two suspects also face charges in the same case, while a fourth is being sought by authorities.

BELGRADE - The preliminary results of a survey focusing on the health of the Serbian population have shown that 22.1 percent of adults and 13.7 percent of children are overweight, 34.7 percent of the population smoke on a daily basis and 54 percent consume alcohol occasionally or constantly.

A flock of 85 sheep in Gortynia, in the Peloponnese, has been placed in quarantine after the animals were found to be infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), commonly known by its acronym BSE or as made cow disease, even though it can also be transmitted to sheep and goats.

BELGRADE -- The latest report of Belgrade’s Institute for Biocides and Medical Ecology gives no confirmation that mosquitoes in Serbia carry West Nile virus (WNV).
This is the case despite the May flooding and high humidity that provides these insects with favorable breeding conditions.

Switzerland Halts Pork Imports Over Swine Fever Fears
Switzerland is to ban imports of live pigs and pork from several EU countries, including Bulgaria, in a bid to stop an African swine fever outbreak from reaching the country.
Imports from Bulgaria and Romania and some parts of Latvia and Croatia will be banned as of Wednesday, Swiss food safety authorities said on Tuesday.
