Six out of seven individuals who are accused of blackmailing shopkeepers in the southern suburbs of Athens were remanded in custody on Friday. 

A seventh defendant was conditionally released. All defendants denied accusations of belonging to a criminal gang, extortion, aggravated assault, damage to property and violation of the weapons law. 

Blackmail as policy

An unknown person on Top Channel's show Top Story's Facebook page on Thursday sent shockwaves across Albania after claiming that the TV channel's bosses had cancelled the airing of an important documentary entitled "The Oligarchs of the Urban Renaissance".

Romania's High Court of Cassation and Justice ruled on Tuesday that pretending to be someone else on Facebook is an offence punishable under the country's criminal law.

The perpetrator said he was owed money

Three men in the western port city of Patra have been charged with abduction and attempted blackmail.

The suspects, 31, 42 and 44, reportedly used violence to force the 40-year-old victim into a car and drove him to a cafe owned by one of the perpetrators where they beat him, made threats against his family and demanded 5,500 euros.

A 58-year-old man and his 32-year-old son were arrested Wednesday on charges of attempted extortion and slander of a proprietor of a meat processing company in the Rendi suburb of Athens.

A case of blackmail in a small northern Greece city has shaken the local community, as the alleged victim is a well-known and long-time physician in the area, while the chief suspect is his 21-year-old secretary, who is accused of drugging her employer and taking nude pictures of him.
