Omnibus bill paves legal way for controversial 'Kanal Istanbul'
An endeavor to legally define waterways is underway as part of efforts to realize a controversial project, dubbed "Kanal Istanbul," which aims to build a canal across Istanbul's European side to supplement the Bosphorus Strait.
Human smugglers turn to speed boats to traffic migrants across Aegean
Human smugglers have started using speed boats for the illegal transportation of migrants trying to reach Europe, the governor of the western Turkish province Çanakkale told state-run Anadolu Agency on March 15.
"Human smugglers always change their tactics. In the face of this, we are also trying to develop our own tactics, pushing our limits," said Hamza Erkal.
Türk Telekom builds submarine cable station at Marmaris
Türk Telekom has built a high-capacity submarine data network at the Aegean resort town of Marmaris as a part of a $700-million project.
The SEA-ME-WE-5 project will connect 17 countries, including Turkey, to a system that stretches for more than 20,000 kilometers between Asia and Europe, according to company representatives.
Large amount of munitions commandeered in Crete
Greek port authorities confiscated 6,400 carbines and a large amount of ammunition at Souda Bay, in Crete, Friday. The Greek authorities found the large munitions cargo after searching on the vessel ‘Kuki Boy’ flying a Togo flag. The investigations came to completion on Friday and the port authorities proceeded with the commandeering of the freight.
