NATO wants to "monitor Russian military activity" and at the same time support the "increased presence of the Alliance in the region" and therefore deploys AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) surveillance aircraft from Germany to Romania. They should arrive in Bucharest next Tuesday, according to a NATO media release, quoted by DPA

The Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft will be based at an air base in the Central Anatolian province of Konya. They will be used for reconnaissance in support of air strikes against ISIL targets. 

NATO is planning to deploy surveillance aircrafts to support the international coalition's ongoing fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) before the end of October, a senior official has said.

The Turkish General Staff has announced that a NATO Boeing E-3A Sentry Airborne Warning & Control System (AWACS) aircraft has begun surveillance in Turkish airspace as part of assurance measures for Turkey, while noting that NATO's mission would be conducted "periodically" in the coming months.

NATO has agreed "in principle" to a U.S. request to deploy AWACS air surveillance aircraft to help out in the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), its chief Jens Stoltenberg said on Feb. 11.

The German military is preparing to send more troops who will operate early-warning defense planes to support NATO ally Turkey in order to contribute to the protection of the country's airspace from possible threats from neighboring Syria.
