Šenk Homestead recognised at Constructive Alps competition

Ljubljana – Šenk Homestead in the Jezersko area in north-western Slovenia has received a special mention at the sixth international architecture competition Constructive Alps, held by Switzerland and Lichtenstein.

Out of 240 entries from seven countries, the jury recognised eleven projects as outstanding, said the Slovenian Environment and Spatial Planning Ministry.

Discussion highlights serious wastewater issues in mountain areas

Ljubljana – Calls to restrict the ever growing hiking industry in Slovenia’s mountains were heard at a press conference by environmental group Cipra Slovenija, which highlighted serious issues with waste water management. Compounded by climate change, pollution is affecting streams and could threaten access to drinking water, experts warned.

Yet another fish die-off, this time near Lake Bled

Bled/Radovljica – The peak of the tourist season at Lake Bled resulted in large quantities of malodorous waste being washed off into the only outlet from the lake, the local environmental organisation has warned, adding that the Sava Bohinjka river is also full of algae. This resulted in the nearby fish farm having to euthanise thousands of fish due to poisoning.

Mountain rescuers busy this weekend rescuing people and dog

Bohinj/Kranj – Slovenia’s mountain rescue teams were again busy this Sunday as they came to the aid of several injured hikers as well as a dog in four helicopter dispatches. More and more hikers have insufficient knowledge about mountaineering equipment and underestimate the mountains, the authorities warn, urging responsible behaviour.

Army starting three-week training with allied forces

Ljubljana – The Slovenian Armed Forces are starting two military exercises to train with members of allied forces on the ground and in the air in several parts of Slovenia until 23 September.

Training will be carried out during the day and at night in areas around the air base Cerkelje ob Krki (SE), the Poček training grounds (SW) and the mountains in the north-west.

Fully renovated Hotel Bohinj reopens

Bohinj – Hotel Bohinj in Ribčev Laz on the shore of Lake Bohinj has reopened after a complete renovation. Owned by crypto-millionaire Damian Merlak, the four-star hotel offers 69 rooms and relies on a combination of the traditional and modern. An open day on Friday will follow Thursday’s grand opening.
