The number of migrants illegally entering the European Union by crossing the Western Balkans has almost doubled this year, EU border agency Frontex said on Thursday, with the majority coming from Syria and Afghanistan, Reuters reported.

Approximately 152,600 persons, Romanian and foreign citizens, with over 41,300 vehicles (of which 15,600 trucks) conducted control formalities through the border crossing points at the level of the entire country in the past 24 hours, informs the General Inspectorate of the Border Police on Wednesday.

Approximately 174,200 people, Romanian and foreign citizens, with over 41,800 means of transportation (of which 9,900 trucks) have presented themselves to carry out their formalities at the border crossing points nationwide, in the last 24 hours, according to a press release sent by the General Inspectorate of the Border Police (IGPF) to AGERPRES on Monday.

Border policemen have managed to confiscate since the beginning of the year over 4,600 tonnes of waste, as part of some operations carried out with the Environmental Guard - the Directorate of Customs, Border Police Inspectorate General (IGPF) Head, chief police quaestor Liviu Bute informed on Thursday. The border police in Bors has caught 30 foreigners who were attempting to illegally cross the border with Hungary hidden in a lorry. On Saturday, around 2.00 pm, at the Bors Border Crossing Point, a Turkish citizen showed up for the formalities, on the way out of the country, driving a lorry registered in Turkey.
