Researchers give new hope for Alzheimer’s therapy

Encouraging results have emerged from the multi-year research of a team of scientists at the Demokritos National Center of Scientific Research giving hope of future tools for the better treatment of conditions that affect the central nervous system, such as Alzheimer's disease and malignant brain tumors.

Philips cuts 6,000 more jobs after sleep device recall

Embattled Dutch medical tech maker Philips said yesterday it will slash 6,000 more jobs worldwide after fresh losses caused by a massive recall of faulty sleep respirators.

Chief Executive Roy Jakobs announced the "difficult, but necessary further reduction of our workforce" by 2025, which comes just three months after it announced another 4,000 cuts.

Four out of 10 Greek kids have a weight problem

Poor diet, lack of sleep and exercise, and very low rates of breastfeeding are seen as the main causes of children being overweight in Greece. 

Experts also note the Greek mentality that associates the expression of love with the offer of large quantities of food, as well as celebrations with the consumption of sweets. 

An Outbreak of Bird Flu was discovered near the Bulgarian Town of Etropole

The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency has detected an outbreak of the disease Influenza (flu) in birds in a facility for breeding quails for eggs in the land of the town of Etropole in the Sofia region.

The affected farm consists of two sites, owned by one owner, with a closed cycle of quail hatching and rearing. Sampling was carried out after high bird mortality was found at the site.

Turkish scientists work on drug to prevent cancer

In the light of the previous studies of Türkiye's Nobel laureate in chemistry, Aziz Sancar, Turkish scientists have conducted a study that could prevent the development of cancer with drugs.

The absence of the p53 gene, which is called the "guardian angel" against cancer and prevents the uncontrolled proliferation of cells, causes 50 percent of all cancers.

Orthrus arrives in Greece as influenza cases drop

The new offshoot of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 known as Orthrus (CH.1.1) has arrived in Greece, according to the National Public Health Organization's (EODY) weekly epidemiological report. 

It said a total of 93 cases have been detected. What's more, cases of the dangerous Kraken subvariant (XBB.1.5) are increasing slowly, with seven cases identified so far.
