Ex-Journalist Barekov Heads His Party's EU Elections List

Nikolay Barekov, a former journalist and TV host, announced he would lead the EU Elections list of a coalition forged by his Bulgaria without Censorship (BWC) party.

The leaders of nationalist VMRO-BND, Agrarian People's Union and Gergiovden Movement, the other three parties within the coalition, will rank immediately after him in the list, Dnevnik.bg has reported.

Protests Resume in Bulgaria over Threat to Coast

Thousands of people joined marches in the Bulgarian capital, Sofia, and other cities this week, denouncing a project to redevelop part of the Black Sea coast and calling on the government to resign.

“Dirty interests related to offshore companies are trying to destroy one of last remaining untouched places on the coast,” Borislav Sandov, a leader of the green movement, said.

Bulgaria's Central Electoral Commission is to have a new Deputy Chair, short after its top members were appointed by Parliament.

Margariza Zlatareva, who was the center-right opposition GERB's candidate, has been declared deputy chief by Bulgarian lawmakers with the approval of MPs from GERB and ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS).

Bulgarian Socialist Leader ‘Lost Files’ Trial Begins

The trial against Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) leader and former Prime Minister, Sergey Stanishev, in the "lost files" case begins on Tuesday.

The legal investigation against Stanishev stemmed from the case where he was charged with losing 7 classified documents containing information constituting a state secret, while in office as Prime Minister (2005-2009).
