Miners Stage Roadblocks over Lack of Layoff Compensation

Nearly a hundred miners staged on Wednesday a blockade of the road linking Burgas and the resort town of Slanchev Bryag (Sunny Beach) by the Black Sea.

A trade union official representing workers at the mine earlier told the Bulgarian National Radio the average value of salaries and layoff compensations owed to each of them was to the tune of BGN 2000 (around EUR 1023).

Workers at closed Cherno More mine, in the region of Burgas, blocked on Tuesday morning the road between Burgas and the resort of Slanchev Bryag (Sunny Beach) to protest against the delay in payment of wages and compensations.

Work at the mine ended earlier in April, leaving its workforce of nearly 300 people without jobs and with unpaid salaries for March.

Bulgarian authorities detained eighteen illegal migrants and two suspected smugglers after stopping a minibus for inspection in the city of Burgas on Tuesday evening.

The group, which had crossed the Bulgarian border illegally, consisted of men, women and children who identified themselves as coming from Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq.

The officers uncovered the migrants when they stopped a Ford Transit van bearing British licence plates for inspection at the bridge over Karaagach river.

An attempted armed robbery of a security van in the Bulgarian town of Sredets on Monday morning left one of the attackers dead.

Two armed youths attacked the security van which was parked in front of the post office in the centre of the town.

The vehicle was transporting money allocated for the payment of pensions in the town.
