Century-old flute returns home

A flute played 88 years ago by Zahit Özsezen, a solo flutist in the early years of the Turkish Republic, has been found in the U.S.

The wooden flute, called Non-Boehm, which Özsezen used about a century ago, has recently returned to the Turkish capital from California.

Slain journalist Uğur Mumcu commemorated on 30th death anniversary

Prominent journalist Uğur Mumcu, who died in a bomb attack, was remembered on his 30th death anniversary with various ceremonies held to commemorate him on Jan. 24.

Ceremonies were held on the street where his house was located and at his mausoleum in the Cebeci Asri Cemetery in the capital Ankara, with unanswered questions still lingering over his murder.

Ankara police quash protests after mistaking Spanish Narcos theme for 'Kurdish music'

Police intervened to quash demonstrations against the expulsion of 16 academics from Ankara University after mistakenly believing that protesters were playing Kurdish "propaganda music," daily Birgün has reported. 

The protesters were actually playing the Spanish theme score of the famous TV series "Narcos," which tells the life of Columbian drug lord Pablo Escobar.   

Police disperse demonstrators, detain five people in Ankara University

Police have attacked a group that gathered to protest against the sacking of 330 academics from their positions at Turkish universities by the Higher Education Board (YÖK), detaining five demonstrators at the Cebeci Campus of Ankara University, Doğan News Agency has reported.
