Censorship in Romania

Romania's Minister of Culture Bogdan Gheorghiu is inviting Romanians to celebrate the Romanian Language Day by reading, reporting that this year the recommendation of the Permanent Representation of Romania to the EU for the Readers of Europe 2021 programme is "Orbitor" (Blinding) by Mircea Cartarescu.

Liberal MP Alexandru Muraru, Government's Special Representative for Promoting Memory Policies, Combating Anti-Semitism and Xenophobia, announces that Parliament will hold a solemn meeting of the two chambers on 30 June to commemorate, for the first time in history, the victims of the June 1941's Pogrom in Iasi.

Manager of the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant (MNTR) Virgil-Stefan Nitulescu said on Tuesday that 30 years after the reopening of the museum on February 5, 1990, a new beginning awaits its team, currently working on reopening MNTR's permanent exhibition. Culture Minister Bogdan Gheorghiu said on Wednesday that the duty of the public institutions and administrations is to make sure that the names of those who made history and sketched up Romania's national destiny will not be forgotten by children, adding that a Romania of culture is a country of partnerships, increased tolerance and acceptance.

The judgment is not final and will be challenged by the Ursu family's legal representatives, the victim's son, Andrei Ursu, told BIRN in a telephone interview from the US.

"This is outrageous," said Ursu, who attributed the acquittal to "corruption in the justice system."

"We had overwhelming evidence [for a conviction]," he added.

The "Cathedrale" painting signed by Marcel Iancu was awarded on Tuesday at the avant-garde auction organized by Artmark for the price of 80,000 euro. The painting comes from the artist's collection and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by Dadi Janco, Committee Marcel Janco, Tel Aviv, 23 June, 2011.
