Chalkidiki mining workers occupy Energy Ministry (photos-videos)

A group of gold mining workers from the Cassandra mining plant in Chalkidiki stormed the Energy Ministry a little after 8.30am on Wednesday and are currently occupying the premises. Police swat teams units have arrived on the scene to prevent the remaining protesters outside the Ministry from entering the building.

Investments facing problems at Halkidiki, Elliniko, airports

Investors continue to have a tough time in Greece, but the next few days will be crucial for two of the country's biggest projects: the gold mines in Halkidiki, northern Greece, and the development of the old Athens airport plot at Elliniko. Thessaloniki airport has also felt some turbulence.

Eldorado chief executive accuses Greek gov't of 'political posturing'

Canadian mining company Eldorado Gold on Monday threatened to suspend a major investment in Greece in ten days, accusing the government of delaying permits and licenses.

One of Greece's largest foreign investors, Eldorado operates mines in northern Greece that have faced vehement opposition from parts of local communities on environmental grounds, with protests often turning violent.

3.2 earthquake hits Thessaloniki

A 3.2 magnitude earthquake was felt in the city of Thessaloniki in northern Greece the morning of Tuesday. The tremor occurred in the region of Nea Apolonia at approximately 6.16am and had a depth of 10km, according to the Geodynamic Institute of the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki. The earthquake was also felt in the area of Chalkidiki.
