Polls find ND leading SYRIZA by over 15 points ahead of European elections

Two polls released on Friday showed the ruling New Democracy (ND) leading main opposition SYRIZA by just over 15 points ahead of the June 9 European elections. 

The first poll, conducted by Marc, put the difference between New Democracy and SYRIZA at 15.3%.

Greece’s oldest woman dies

Greece's reported oldest woman passed away at the age of 119 on Tuesday night on the island of Crete. Eleni Baroulaki was born in 1905 and lived her entire life in Paidochori in the municipality of Apokoronos in Hania.

According to local news outlet Haniotika Nea, her father had reached 107 years while her mother lived to be 100.

​Two men accused of migrant smuggling jailed in Crete pending trial

Two men accused of migrant smuggling were sent to pretrial detention after appearing before a prosecutor in Chania, Crete, on Monday.

They were among a group of 47 migrants, who had been rescued from a boat 15 miles outside Gavdos, Greece's southernmost island, on Wednesday.

Kasselakis and McBeth announce wedding date

Main opposition SYRIZA leader Stefanos Kasselakis and his husband, Tyler McBeth, have announced that their Greek wedding will take place at the end of August on Crete.

"T & S Wedding … We are so excited to welcome you all to one of our favorite places to celebrate this special day …. XOXO Tyler & Stefanos," an image the invitation circulating in the Greek media reads.

French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle anchors in Crete

The French Navy's flagship aircraft carrier, Charles de Gaulle, arrived at NATO pier K14 at Marathi, in Souda (Crete) on Thursday.

The carrier will remain at in the Chania region until May 7, to participate in the mission Aquila, a NATO deployment of 15 countries in the Eastern Mediterranean.
