Konstantinos Mitsotakis funeral under way in Crete (live streaming)

The funeral of former Greek PM Konstantinos Mitsotakis, who passed away at the age of 99 on Monday, is under way at the Municipal cemetery of Agrgoulide in Chania, Crete. In a moving eulogy, his daughter Dora Bakoyannis thanked her father for his contribution to the country and the love and humanity he taught her of Crete and Greece.

Public pays respects to late PM

Former conservative prime minister Constantine Mitsotakis laid in repose Wednesday for the public to pay its respects at the Athens Metropolitan Cathedral ahead of a funeral service at 3 p.m.

The mourners - among them the country's 76-year-old former king, Constantine - filed the the flag-draped coffin and expressed their condolences to the family.

Former Greek Prime Minister Konstantinos Mitsotakis has died aged 99

Former Prime Minister and Honorary President of the main opposition party New Democracy, Konstantinos Mitsotakis died an hour after Sunday midnight at the age of 99.

His family issued a simple statement:

“Konstantinos Mitsotakis passed away at one o’ clock after midnight, surrounded by the people he loved and loved him”.

Champion of Crete synagogue restoration dies, 85

Nicholas Hannan-Stavroulakis, the man who famously fought for the restoration in 1999 of the Etz Hayyim Synagogue in the town of Hania on the island of Crete, died Friday morning. He was 85.

Stavroulakis served as the director of the Jewish Museum in Athens and was an emblematic figure in Greece's Jewish community.

His funeral will held in Athens on Monday. 

Tourist dies after falling into trench in Crete

A Finnish tourist has died after falling into a 2-meter deep ditch on the side of the road in the Platanias resort, western Hania, Crete.

The body of the 65-year-old tourist, who has not been identified, was found on Friday by a local man who notified the police.

A post-mortem was due to take place to establish the cause of his death.

Evangelos-Nektarios Kalymnios, 45, the armed man that is holding three hostages in a stand-off with police in Chania, Crete, spoke exclusively to protothema.gr saying that he will not leave unless the council changes its decision to revoke his kiosk permit in the town. “I have 5 children and declared 0.05 cents in taxes. I am broke. I haven’t slept a minute since the weekend.

UPD: According to local news site cretapost the man had been undergoing rehab treatment at the facility he barged into and was in despair as the council decided to revoke his kiosk permit in the old Venetian port. According to reports there are three hostages, employees the centre, locked up in a room.

ND leads SYRIZA by 11 points in latest poll

Opposition party New Democracy (ND) leads ruling SYRIZA party by over 10 percentage points, according to the most recent opinion poll conducted by Pulse and aired on Tv station Action24. 31.5% of the respondents said they intended to vote for ND as opposed to 20.5% who responded they would support SYRIZA, while 38% preferred early elections.
