Obesity a hefty time bomb hovering above Greece
The Health Ministry is reportedly preparing a special program for obesity, as citizens and many doctors still do not consider it a disease and do not take targeted measures to deal with it. The program will focus on prevention, early diagnosis and treatment with free follow-up by a nutritionist and other professionals.

Every Third Bulgarian Child Is Overweight
Bulgaria is facing a concerning trend as new data reveals that every third child in the country is overweight, with obesity rates soaring among adolescents. According to data from 2022, the prevalence of obesity among children aged 7 to 19 is alarmingly high, with the most cases identified among seventh-grade students. These findings were shared by Deputy Minister of Health Assoc.

Health ministry, Unicef pledge to combat child obesity in Greece
Greece and UNICEF on Thursday signed a cooperation agreement to help prevent and combat child obesity on Thursday. The agreement was signed by Minister for Health Thanos Plevris, General Secretary for Public Health Irini Agapidaki, and UNICEF's Representative in Greece Luciano Calestini.
Obesity: Alarming estimates for adults and children
The global threat of obesity also lingers in Greece, where four in 10 adults and almost one in four children and teenagers will be obese by 2035 if preventive measures aren't taken to offset the current trends, according to the World Obesity Atlas for 2023 published on Thursday by the World Obesity Federation.
Nearly one in five people is obese in Turkey: Survey
Nearly one in five people in Turkey is obese, according to the results of a 2019 health survey released by the TÜİK on June 4.
The survey showed that 21.1 percent of the Turkish people aged 15 years and older had a body mass index of 30 or over, TÜİK said. The rate was 19.6 percent in 2016.
WHO: 61.7% of Bulgarians over 18 are Overweight
According to data of the World Health Organization 61.7% of Bulgarians over 18 are overweight which places the country close to top of the list in Europe regarding this index.
The situation is similar with children - 13.6% are overweight. Experts say that this is due mostly to an unhealthy lifestyle that includes a high-calorie diet combined with lack of exercise, BNR reported.

UNICEF: 1/3 of the Bulgarian Children - Overweight
The healthy eating subject brought children and chefs together in the kitchen. The event takes place against the backdrop of alarming statistics, in which Bulgaria ranks first in the number of overweight children. According to a UNICEF survey, their numbers have increased by 120% since the 1990s.
