Chiprovtsi

More than 100 residential areas in the northwestern regions of Bulgaria were left without power last night owing to the damage caused by the heavy rains. Energy company crews are making repairs and work will continue until power supply is restored.

The situation is most severe in western Bulgaria.

After a 3-day firefight, the fire in the Chiprovtsi Balkan is extinguished. The fire is also localized in the Serbian part of the Balkan Mountains, but the situation there remains worrying. 

The army, with Mi-17 helicopters, have joined the efforts to extinguish the big fire along the ridge of the Balkan Range which has spread to the territory of neighbouring Serbia, BNR reported.

The fire broke out yesterday around noon and still continues to this hour. It has spread over 36 square kilometres along the ridge of the Balkan Mountains. Part of Serbian territory is affected, too.

The Abbot of Chiprovtsi Monastery was caught driving with nearly 3 promiles of alcohol in his blood on St. George's Day, Nova TV reported. His was also committing another crime because he never had a driver's license.

The production of Chiprovtsi carpets has been inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

There were fourteen people at the time of the explosion in the ammo factory Midzhur near the village of Gorni Lom in Bulgaria's north-west, witnesses say.

Initial reports suggested fifteen people could have been inside and feared dead, with the Interior Ministry saying there were no signs of life except for a movement of a wild animal detected earlier on Thursday morning.
