Cigarette taxes in the United States

Greece has the highest rate of contraband cigarettes in the European Union, which cost the state coffers 690 million euros in revenues last year, as KPMG's "Stella Report," commissioned by Philip Morris International, reveals.

Some cigarettes in Bulgaria already have new, higher prices. A reference in the public tobacco price register shows that many cigarettes brands are more expensive with 20 cents per box. Тhe appreciation is due to the pricing policy of the companies, not the changes in the excise duty. 

The increase in the special consumption tax on tobacco products from January 1 will entail a 100-million-euro annual loss in state revenues, a report issued by the Foundation for Economic and Industrial Research (IOBE) warned on Monday.

Parliament adopted at second reading the increase in the excise tax on cigarettes. It will increase from BGN 70 to BGN 101 per 1,000 cigarettes, reported bTV.
