Cinema of Romania

The Romanian Film Evenings Festival (SFR) which take place for the first time in Timisoara, between 13 and 15 September, will bring a debate about the balance of culture in Romania, an exhibition-document about Queen Marie and Romanian movie premiers.

The film "La Gomera," directed by Corneliu Porumboiu, Romania's submission for the US Academy award for best international feature film 2020, will have its North-American debut at the "Masters" section of the 44th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival, which will take place September 5-15.

Corneliu Porumboiu's 'La Gomera' is Romania's entry for the best international feature film category at the 2020 Oscars, having received the majority of the votes at the meeting of the Romanian Film Selection Committee, a RollerCoaster release informs on Monday.

Actor Razvan Vasilescu on Saturday night was awarded the Prize for entire activity at the Transilvania International Film Festival (TIFF), in the beginning of the screening of "California Dreamin (Nesfarsit)", in the Piata Mare (Main Square) of central Sibiului, an event attended by rd 1,500 movie-goers.

Theatre and film actress Eugenia Bosanceanu died at 93, the Theater Union of Romania (UNITER) informs.

"On Christmas Eve, great theatre and film actress Eugenia Bosanceanu left us, at the age of 93," reads a UNITER Facebook post.

The Astor movie theater will be hosting screenings during the afternoons through November, with two different films each week - most of which have premiered in Greece.

The Astor Cinema is hosting a tribute to Romanian cinema, presenting the country's best recent films, through Wednesday, April 12. The daily screening program starts at 5.40 p.m. with Palme d'Or nominated "Graduation" by Cristian Mungiu, who shared the Best Director award at Cannes last year with Olivier Assayas. It is followed at 8 p.m.

Two bands with artists of Romania, the Republic of Moldova, Bulgaria, Curacao and Germany opened on Friday evening, at the Jean Bart Theatre of Tulcea City, the second edition of "Dobrojazz" ethno-jazz international festival.

"The Forest" documentary, by Sinisa Dragin, is a film "about how art can influence politics," said journalist and film critic Cristian Tudor Popescu on Thursday evening at Studio Cinema, where the first national screening of the production took place.

The Transylvania International Film Festival TIFF offers concerts, debates with special guests and thematic films in several sections - HBO Day, EcoTIFF, Hungarian Day, plus '25 Years After', a new programme dedicated to the major change in 1989.
