I was lucky enough to be able to attend this year's Athens Democracy Forum held in association with The New York Times in the shadow of the Acropolis, in the "cradle of democracy." For three days I got to hear from politicians, entrepreneurs, and civil society leaders that democracy as we have come to know it is under stress.

The 2019 Athens Marathon, dubbed "the Authentic," takes place on Sunday, November 10, more than 2,500 after the legendary Pheidippides ran from the Battle of Marathon to Athens to announce the Greeks' victory over the Persians.

Acropolis elevator back in operation
The wheelchair lift on Acropolis Hill is again available to the public following repair work, Greece's Culture Ministry said Wednesday.
In a statement earlier in the day, the ministry said the lift would remain out of service for at least four days.

Restoration of Parthenon’s north wall to showcase citadel's geometry
The Parthenon is to be brought one step closer to what it looked like in the 18th century after the Central Archaeological Council (KAS) last week approved a project to restore the long northern wall of its inner structure (known as the cella or naos).
Alexander the Great finds his place in Athens
A statue of the ancient Greek warrior-king Alexander the Great will be officially unveiled on Friday in central Athens. The statue, which is a work by prominent 20th century sculptor Yiannis Pappas (1913-2005), was positioned on Wednesday on the corner of Amalias and Vasilissis Olgas avenues in central Athens.

A statue of the ancient Greek warrior-king Alexander the Great was on Wednesday installed on the corner of Amalias and Vasilissis Olgas avenues in central Athens.

Statue of Alexander to be erected in Athens
The plan to erect a statue of the ancient Greek warrior-king Alexander the Great in central Athens appeared to be on track on Tuesday after its base was placed on the corner of Amalias and Vasilissis Olgas avenues.
The statue is a work by prominent 20th century sculptor Yiannis Pappas (1913-2005).

Candidate Athens mayor speaks against high-rises around Acropolis Hill

A photograph of a full moon rising over the Parthenon and the Propylaea that was recently posted on Instagram by National Geographic has attracted more than 1.2 million likes.
The picture capturing the last full moon of 2018 was taken by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Muhammed Muheisen on December 22.
